Mrs. Davis’ Coffee Cake Recipe
This is a first prize winning Coffee Cake recipe from 1920.
Coffee Cake Recipe
One egg (unbeaten), 5 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter (or substitute), 1 1/2 cups flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 cup milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, 1/2 cup walnuts.
Mix the 5 tablespoons sugar with the unbeaten egg, stirring well; add melted shortening, then milk alternately with the flour, which has been sifted twice with the baking powder and spices. Place in a shallow pan (a large-size pie plate will give the right thickness when baked) well greased.
To make the top: Sprinkle batter in the pan with sugar, shake about 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg over this, then the chopped walnuts. Finally place small dots of butter, about the size of a pea over top. Bake in moderate oven.
