Ada Belle Zepp Gernand Rutter

Ada Belle Zepp was born February 11, 1861 in Emmetsburg, Frederick, Maryland.  She is the daughter of Edward Zepp and Elizabeth Slaymaker Tomlinson.  On the 1870 census, Ada is living with her family in Westminster, Maryland.  Her father, Edward is working as a saddler, her mother, Elizabeth is keeping house and Ada and her brother, George are the children living with the parents.  There is also a lady named Annie Kinzer who is a 21 year old school teacher born in Maryland.

In 1880, the family is still living in Westminster, Maryland.  Edward Zepp is working as a harness maker, Elizabeth is keeping house, Ada is living at home and George is working as a clerk in a store.

Marriage to Harry Milton Gernand

Ada Zepp and Harry Milton Gernand married on November 9, 1881 in Carroll, Maryland.  In 1891, their daughter Margaret was born.  Sadly, the marriage ended in 1892 when Harry passed away.

Death of Harry M. Gernand

Harry M. Gernand died in this city on Saturday morning last, after an illness of some months of consumption, in his thirty-fifth year.  A wife, who was a Miss Zepp, of this city, and one child survive him.  The deceased was a printer, and was employed at the Sentinel office here for some 15 years.  A little over a year ago he went to Baltimore and was a compositor on the American.  His health failing, he returned here to recuperate, but he continually grew weaker and finally succumbed to the disease.

His funeral took place Monday afternoon, services being held at the M. P. Church, and the interment at Westminster cemetery.  Carroll Division, S. of T., of which deceased was a member, attended a regalia, and the funeral rites of the order were observed at the grave.  A delegation from Typographical Union No. 12, of Baltimore, was present.  The active pall bearers were Dr. Charles Billingslea, Messrs. Frank K. Herr, Jesse F. Shreeve, Hammond Leas, John E. L. Hanna, John H. Mitten, of the Sons of Temperance; honorary, Dr. J. W. Hering, Richard Manning, Isaac C. Baile, William L. W. Seabrook, Rev. Thomas H. Lewis, D. D., George E. Sharrer.

Ada is living in Baltimore, she is in the city directory in 1896, 1899, 1904 and 1906.

Marriage to Edward Leonard Rutter

Ada and Edward Rutter married in 1907.  Edward became a widow in 1901 and left with small children to raise.  Ada and Edward are living on Pitcher street in Baltimore on the 1910 census.  Edward is working as a salesman.  Ada is listed as not working and Edward’s children Margriete, John E., Ruth, John R. and Charles K are living with the couple.  They lived together in Baltimore for 12 years until Edward’s death on April 12, 1919.

Later years

Ada is living in Baltimore on the 1920 census with a nine year old grandson, Milton Boscher.  In 1930, Ada is living at the Carroll County Pauper’s Home and is 69 years old.  Ada dies seven years later on November 30, 1937.


Mrs. Ada Belle Rutter, Westminster, died at 12:30 o’clock this morning at the age of 76 years.  She was the widow of the late Edward L. Rutter and a daughter of the late Edward F. and Elizabeth Tomlinson Zepp.  Four grandchildren survive.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a. m. at the H. Bankard & Son funeral home.  The Rev. H. G. C. Martin, pastor of Ascension Episcopal church will officiate.  Burial will be in the Westminster cemetery.
