Sarah Melvine Herr Kauffman

 

Sarah Melvine Herr was born December 4, 1882 in Osborne, Ohio.  She was the daughter of Dr. Christian A. Herr and Emma J. Kissinger.  She was raised in Greene County, Ohio.  In the year 1900, she was living with her parents, younger siblings Benjamin and Anna and her grandfather Eli Herr in Bath, Ohio.

In 1903, Melvine is living in Dayton, Ohio.  She is listed in the Dayton, Ohio city directory: Herr S. Melvine, wks. 29 E. 2d.

Melvine married Benjamin F. Kauffman on October 16, 1907 in Greene County, Ohio.  She listed Bookkeeper as her occupation on her marriage license and that she was not previously married.  Benjamin is listed as a Conductor on the marriage license application.

On the 1910 census, Benjamin and Melvine are living in Bethel, Clark, Ohio.  Benjamin’s occupation is Conductor at Ohio Electric and Melvine has no occupation listed.  There are also no children listed for her, but she is attached to an infant son on her Findagrave.com page.  This infant was born and died on October 27, 1908.  I haven’t found a record linking Benjamin and Melvine to this child yet.

Benjamin and Melvine had two children, Mary Anna Kauffman who was born May 21, 1910 and Richard Herr Kauffman who was born August 7, 1917.

On the 1920 census, Benjamin, Melvine and their two children are living in Bethel, Clark, Ohio.  Benjamin is listed as being a Conductor with the Rail Road.  Melvine doesn’t have an occupation listed.

On the 1930 census, the family is still living in Bethel, Ohio.  Benjamin is listed as a Conductor for an Electric Railroad.  Their daughter Mary Anna is 19 and Richard is 12.

Benjamin F. Kauffman died on Ocotber 7, 1931.  His obituary is published in The Dayton Herald on October 9, 1931.  It says: Kauffman – Benjamin f., age 68, of Medway, Ohio, on Wednesday at 1:40 p. m.  Survived by his widow, Melvine; a daughter, Mary Anna; a son, Richard; three sisters, Mrs. Norman Bear, Miss Elizabeth Kauffman of Medway, Mrs. B. C. Boone of Shiloh springs, Ohio.  Funeral Saturday at 2:30 p. m. from the late residence in Medway.  Burial in Mennonite cemetery.  Friends invited.

On the 1940 census, Melvine is living with her son, Richard, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It is listed that in 1935, they were both living in Medway, Ohio.  There are no occupations listed for either Melvine or Richard.

Melvine died on January 18, 1943 in St. Louis, Mo.  Her obituary was found in The Dayton Herald on January 19, 1943 and says: Medway – Mrs. Melvina Kauffman, 63, former resident of Medway, where she was Journal-Herald correspondent, died yesterday morning at her home in St. Louis, Mo.  Services and burial will be in Osborn.  She is the widow of Benjamin Kauffman and is survived by a son, Richard of St. Louis, with whom she had lived for several years and a daughter, Marianna, field organizer for a business sorority.
