Homemade Hot Chocolate

Rich homemade hot chocolate recipe from 1923

  • 2 oz chocolate
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup Sugar
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract


  1. Put the milk in a saucepan over medium low heat to start warming up.
  2. Put the chocolate squares in a glass measuring cup and melt it in the microwave. 
  3. In another measuring cup, heat the water in the microwave.  Then pour the boiling water into the cup with the melted chocolate and stirred until mixed thoroughly.
  4. When the milk is warm, add the sugar and salt and mix well.
  5. Pour the chocolate water slowly into the milk mixture while stirring with a whisk. When it is hot, remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
